Asylum Requests in 2015: 24,678 filed in Italy through May, 41,703 arrivals by sea

4 June 2015:    In a hearing before a committee of the Italian Senate, Alessandro Pansa, head of the Police, said that “in the first five months of this year 41,703 migrants have landed on our shores, compared to 39,000 during the same period last year”. He continued “there have been 24,678 asylum seekers, but that does not mean that all of them are eligible”. Pansa also noted that in 2014, “15,726 persons were repatriated, or 52% of those removed, while this year, those repatriated are 5,823 out of a total of 12,154 persons removed”.

4 June 2015: June 2015 marks the end of the first programming cycle of the Solidarity and Migrant Flow Management Fund, which coincided in Italy with the creation of a system for implementing Voluntary Assisted Return (RVA, as per its acronym in Italian). Thanks to the European Repatriation Fund, under the direction and with support from Italy’s Interior Ministry, during the past six years, a national referral system for RVA has been created through the formation of RIRVA, the Italian Network for Voluntary Assisted Return (known as NIRVA from 2009-2012), and various return projects have been funded.

Asylum Requests: Over 11,000 filed in the first two months of 2015

2 June 2915: According to data from Italy’s Interior Ministry, in the first two months of 2015, 11,247 applications for asylum were filed. Those seeking asylum were predominantly male, (10,110 persons) with 1,137 applications by females. There were 626 unaccompanied minors and 447 accompanied minors. The prevalent countries of origin were Gambia (1,639), Nigeria (1,220) and Senegal (1,194).

International Protection: Conference in Verona on 4 June 2015

Italy’s Senate President Grasso astonished at refugee and migrant debate focusing on costs

28 May 2015: “I’m very struck by the way in which the debate on migrants and on refugees has unfolded. In the face of human tragedies that affect entire populations, of wars in which civilians are the foremost victims, the focus of hundreds of hours of television transmissions and articles is all centered on costs, starting with the famous thirty euros per day”, said Italy’s Senate President Pietro Grasso yesterday, at a conference on the Shoah and Immigration sponsored by the Human Rights Commission.

Immigration, Frontex: Operations base will be in Catania

28 May 2015: Frontex’s Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri confirmed in an interview with ANSA that the regional operations base for Frontex’s expanded operations regarding refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean will be located in Italy’s Catania region. This operational base will be able to direct activities in “hotspots” where specialists from Frontex, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and Europol will collaborate with Italian authorities, according to Leggeri.
